NJ Train Crash Caused By Tree Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured

A train operator was killed and 23 were injured in a train crash in New Jersey on Monday.
The crash happened in Mansfield Township on a River Line train. The train was heading south from Trenton when it hit part of a tree that had fallen onto the tracks just after 6 a.m. The collision happened just north of Roebling Station.
The River Line has been suspended between Florence and Trenton in both directions. A substitute bus service is available.
Officials have not identified the deceased victim. The injured victims suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment.
There were 42 people on board when the crash happened. The remaining passengers were transported from the scene by bus.
Multiple EMS, police and fire crews responded to the scene.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said on X that he had been briefed on the incident.
“An investigation is underway. Our prayers are with all affected by this tragic incident,” Murphy said.
Several roads have also been closed in the area, including the southbound side of U.S.-130 in Burlington County.
The River Line is a hybrid rail in southern New Jersey that connects commuters from Camden and Trenton. The route runs parallel to the Delaware River. The service, which began in 2004, is operated by NJ Transit. Its average weekday ridership is over 8,600.
In August, a 15-year-old was fatally struck by a River Line train in Palmyra. Matthew Dickinson was a pedestrian walking near the Chestnut Street crossing when he was hit by the northbound train. The passengers and operator were unharmed.
Dickinson was a student athlete at Palmyra High School. He was on his way to a soccer scrimmage at the time.
The River Line runs through Palmyra’s downtown district along Broad Street.
